Springboks and All Blacks Renew Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry

Few rivalries in world rugby carry the history, passion and excitement of a Springboks versus All Blacks clash.

This weekend, the two rugby giants meet at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, 22 August 2026, in the opening Test of the four-match Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

South Africa enter the clash as the No. 1-ranked team in the world and reigning Rugby World Cup champions, with New Zealand sitting just behind them. With both nations among the favourites for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, this series offers an early glimpse of what could unfold when the world’s best teams battle for the biggest prize in rugby.

The All Blacks have already made their presence felt during their South African tour, defeating the Stormers 38-21, the Hollywoodbets Sharks 54-0 and the Bulls 50-19. Those victories have given New Zealand plenty of momentum, but facing the Springboks is a completely different challenge.

South Africa will be without captain Siya Kolisi, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury, with Pieter-Steph du Toit taking over the captaincy. Damian de Allende is also set to reach a major milestone with his 100th Test appearance, adding another special storyline to an already highly anticipated encounter.

The rivalry will continue beyond Johannesburg, with the second Test taking place in Cape Town on 29 August, before the teams return to Johannesburg on 5 September. The series will then conclude in Baltimore, United States, on 12 September.

While the focus is firmly on Saturday’s battle, the bigger picture is impossible to ignore. With the 2027 Rugby World Cup less than two years away, South Africa will be looking to maintain their position at the top and ultimately defend their title, while New Zealand and other leading nations such as Ireland, England and France will be determined to challenge for the crown.

For rugby fans, this is more than just another Test match. It is a meeting between two of the game’s greatest nations, a rivalry built on decades of history and a chance to see the future of international rugby taking shape.

The question is simple: will the Springboks continue their reign at the top, or will the All Blacks strike the first blow in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry?
