Six Nations: France Takes Aim At The ‘King’ Springboks

New Zealand remains a formidable force in world rugby, but many regard France as the greatest threat to South Africa’s pursuit of a third consecutive Rugby World Cup title in 2027. France’s disappointment following their narrow quarterfinal loss to the Springboks in their home World Cup in 2023 had a lasting impact, with talisman Antoine Dupont switching to Sevens in search of redemption at the Olympics.

The French national team’s subsequent underwhelming performance in the 2024 Six Nations, where they struggled before a late win against England, further illustrated their struggles. Ireland, meanwhile, have dominated European rugby, securing back-to-back Six Nations titles. Their commanding 38-17 victory over France at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome underscored their supremacy. The upcoming Six Nations clash between Ireland and France at Dublin’s AVIVA Stadium on 8 March is poised to be a crucial contest, shaping the European and global rugby hierarchy.

France’s strength at the club level is a significant factor in their World Cup ambitions. The Investec Champions Cup has showcased the dominance of French teams, with Bordeaux Bègles and Toulouse dismantling their opposition in emphatic fashion. Damian Penaud’s six-try masterclass for Bordeaux and Toulouse’s 80-point demolition of Leicester Tigers highlighted their class. French clubs no longer rely heavily on foreign players, as an increasingly talented homegrown player pool fuels their success.

France coach Fabien Galthié faces the challenge of converting club-level dominance into international success. Meanwhile, Ireland must contend with an ageing squad and the temporary absence of coach Andy Farrell, who is focusing on the British and Irish Lions’ 2025 tour of Australia. Concerns over whether Ireland has peaked add intrigue to their Six Nations campaign.

England’s performance in the Six Nations will be closely scrutinised, as coach Steve Borthwick is under pressure following a mixed record since last year’s tournament. Though England defeated Ireland to deny them a Grand Slam, subsequent losses to New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa raised doubts. England’s ability to close out tight games remains an issue, leading to Borthwick’s decision to replace Jamie George with Maro Itoje as captain. Former coach Eddie Jones had questioned Itoje’s leadership qualities, but the lock’s consistent presence on the field could be an asset. England’s defensive frailties, exacerbated by the departure of assistant coach Felix Jones, must be addressed if they are to challenge France and Ireland.

Scotland could emerge as dark horses, having consistently performed well against England. However, the loss of captain Sione Tuipulotu due to injury is a significant setback. Wales, meanwhile, find themselves in a prolonged slump, having failed to win the Six Nations since 2021 and struggling even against Italy in recent meetings. Despite improved performances from their regional teams in the United Rugby Championship, Wales are unlikely to contend for the title.

The upcoming Six Nations will not only determine the balance of power in European rugby but will also provide insight into the teams most capable of challenging the Springboks at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
