A video on YouTube showed just how beloved and popular Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is with supporters. Following the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ tight 35-34 over rising United Rugby Championship force Zebre at Hollywoodbets Kings Park last Saturday, Kolisi and his teammates did a traditional lap of honour, win or lose. He was forced to stay behind while those in the crowd, young and old, clamoured for selfies with him.
His popularity extends far beyond the rugby field, encompassing his leadership, personal journey, and significant societal contributions.
In 2018, Kolisi made history by becoming the first black captain of South Africa’s national rugby team, the Springboks. Under his leadership, the team secured back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, making him, alongside New Zealand’s Richie McCaw, one of only two captains to achieve this feat.
His influence was internationally recognised when he was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024. Comedian Trevor Noah highlighted Kolisi’s role in uniting South Africa during challenging times, emphasising his embodiment of hope and his ability to inspire across racial divides.
Beyond rugby, Kolisi is committed to social change. Through the Kolisi Foundation, he addresses issues like poverty and inequality in South Africa, aiming to uplift underprivileged communities. His dedication to societal betterment further enhances his popularity and respect both locally and globally.

Kolisi’s engaging presence on social media has also contributed to his widespread appeal. His authentic and inspiring posts have garnered a substantial following, reflecting his ability to connect with a diverse audience.
In February, Kolisi’s influence was further highlighted when he met with tennis legend Roger Federer in South Africa. The two sports icons collaborated to support early childhood education, underscoring Kolisi’s commitment to leveraging his platform for positive societal impact.
His journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim, coupled with his leadership on and off the field, has solidified his status as a beloved and influential figure worldwide.
