Head coach JP Pietersen has named a 67-man squad made up of 36 forwards and 31 backs, bringing together established internationals, experienced campaigners and a new generation of exciting young talent.
At the heart of the squad is a wealth of Springbok experience. Eben Etzebeth, André Esterhuizen, Ox Nche, Thomas du Toit, Ethan Hooker, Edwill van der Merwe and Makazole Mapimpi headline a group that brings years of experience at the highest level.
But this Sharks squad is not simply about the established names.
There is a new generation pushing through, with players such as Jurenzo Julius, Jaco Williams, Litelihle Bester, Zekhethelo Siyaya, Phatu Ganyane and other emerging talents adding energy and competition for places. The squad also includes players with Junior Springbok and Currie Cup experience, creating an environment where experience and youth can develop side by side.
nd then there is Ma’a Nonu.
The former All Black centre brings an extraordinary level of international experience to the group and is expected to play an important mentorship role, particularly among the Sharks’ younger backs.
It creates an interesting dynamic: the old guard and the new generation sharing the same changing room, training ground and ambition.
For the experienced players, the challenge is to lead from the front and set the standards. For the younger players, it is an opportunity to learn, compete and establish themselves alongside some of the biggest names in the game.
That combination could be one of the defining features of the Sharks’ campaign.
The leadership structure reflects that balance. André Esterhuizen will captain the side again, supported by co-captains Emile van Heerden, Nick Hatton and Vincent Tshituka, while Vincent Koch and Phepsi Buthelezi take on Club Captain roles focused on standards and culture.
With the URC and European competitions placing significant demands on the squad, depth will be crucial across a long season. The Sharks have also placed emphasis on fitness, combinations and player management during pre-season.
Now the combinations have to come together.
The first test arrives at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on 26 September, when the Sharks open their URC campaign against the Ospreys, before hosting defending champions Leinster in their second round.
For a squad combining Springbok experience, international pedigree and emerging talent, the question is no longer simply about who is in the team.
It is about what they can build together.
New season. New combinations. Same Sharks hunger.
